ERIC MAKARINI MILROY
(ROCK) - SURF SCHOOL MANAGER
Gidday!! Kia Ora tatou katoa. Ko Eric Makarini Milroy toku
ingoa, My friends call me Rock. Ko Ngati Koura, ko Ngai Te Riu,
Ko Ngati Hine Kura, ko te whanau Pani, oku Hapu. To Tuhoe te Iwi,
ko Maunga Pohatu te Maunga. Ko Waikaremoana te Moana. I live on
the side of the beautiful Mt Karioi in Whale BAy overlooking the
long left handers and te moana o tapokopoko o tawhaiki (Tasman Sea),
which is also home of the Raglan Surf School and Karioi Lodge! Ko
Tauranga, ko Hinemataroa nga Awa ko Otenuku, ko Tatahoata, ko Waimako
ko kuha nga Marae. We all feel very priveledged to have Karioi lodge
as our meeting house here in Whale BAy, to have guests from around
N.Z and the globe of all walks of life to experience the surfing
and everyday life styles we are fortunate to have. Ta hang, chill
out and rest and recharge as the name Karioi suggests, it translates
to a place of rest, surrounded in the natural beauty of the native
bush where Maunga meets Moana and where we have a space and place
for our organic vege garden, green house, orchard, beehives and
fresh eggs from our chickens. Man the eating, wow yep some great
feeds. I have been teaching and managing the surf school since est.
in 1999. People sometimes ask if i get tired or impatient with teaching
as with anything there are moments harder than others, but I just
think back to the first wave I caught and remember as clear as yesterday
the thrill and excitement of catching that first wave, borrowing
friends boards until I could afford to buy my own board many years
later. So no it is not only a priveledge and a pleasure but also
a gift to be part of that moment and at the end of the day its all
about having fun. So each day I try to take a leaf out of my dog
Sunny's book cause every single day without fail is the happest
day of his life, so Nau Mai, Haere Mai, come hang with the crew.
Ma te wa & Kia Ora to you all!!

KATIE - SURF INSTRUCTOR
Hi, my name is Katie and I'm from Santa Barbara, California. This
is my first summer working at the Raglan surf school, and I love it
here! Before coming to New Zealand, I taught surfing in California
for three years, and I also spent last summer working as an instructor
in
Costa Rica. When I'm not surfing, I am usually kiteboarding or making
paintings of Raglan's beautiful point breaks." |
